Device management in modern Linux system
by UnnikrishnanThe Linux is become more complex day by day. It is difficult to understand the working of the kernel even though it is an open source project and there are bunch of docs out there in the cloud ( Internet ). It needs more than a day even months to explain the working of the Linux kernel. I am not going for that adventure. Instead of that I will take a small ( and important ) part called the kernel device management. The talk mainly focuses on the Udev ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udev ) and covers the HAL, Dbus and advanced version of HAL called DeviceKit ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeviceKit ). The Udev is the main device manager for the latest Linux kernel and that provides many advantages than the traditional device management tools and style used in older Linux kernels. The Seminar will cover the working of Udev and How the Udev/Hal/Dbus work together with the desktop applications like filemanager/video/audio players etc to make the life of common Linux user an easy one.

3D Computer Graphics Programming
by Praseed PaiThe Visual Computing Paradigm is in vogue for the past ten to fifteen years. In Kerala, we have got plenty of talent in the Computer Graphics content (designers, media animators etc ) space. There are only a few people who have chosen Computer Graphics Programming as a career in Kerala ( for that matter whole of India ). The Session will give a detailed introduction to Computer Graphics Programming Concepts like Mathematics of Co-ordinate System/Geometric Transformations,Viewing,Lighting Techniques,Texture and Special Effects to name a few. I will be demonstrating Procedural Techniques using Cg (NVIDIA) , GLSL (OpenGL) and HLSL (from Microsoft ). These are languages meant for programming the GPU (Graphics Processing units). The Presenter has (in the past ) spent considerable amount of time on Real Time Computer Graphcis as applied to CAD and Visualization industry. The samples will be shown using Direct3D,OpenGL and even Software Rendering. The stuff like Ray Tracing will also be discussed.

Giving life to discaded Computers with LTSP
by VU2SWXWe find a lot of old PC s thrown out as unusable . For example a P3 with 64 MB RAM was a great machine in 2000. But now it is junk. Is it really junk?. The modern PCs with p4 dore2 duo is a very powerful machine . In fact , you may not use the full computing power of your new P4. It is possible to wire up the old PC as a terminal of the new powerful machine. This solution can work wonders in our schools , colleges and offices with reduced hardware costs. This talk will try to explain how to build such a terminal with ease. There will be live demo. Time needed 20 mins. If some one can bring in an old lap with a network card it will be great

Discussion Topics
by DiscussionsHopefully somebody can start a discussion on these: (1)The prospects of starting a software/web company in some place in Kerala. (vs places like Bangalore). (2) Venture capital opportunities in Kerala (3) A discussion on why there are no good (read quality) websites where malayalees hang out (compare to NYT/hacker news/reddit/whatever). (4) What can we do to increase the quality of higher education in India. (People like Pranav Misry etc had to go to MIT to work on his project even though he had the complete idea an skill to do 90% of the work on his own. We could not deliver the 10% push.) (5) Discussions on the rate of decline of traditional media in Kerala. When will our media giants be sidelined? What effects will this have on our 100% literacy crowd?
